Mount Vernon resident angered over road condition

A water leak on Gardendale Crescent has exacerbated the road condition.

A MOUNT Vernon resident says she is at her wits’ end in trying to get the eThekwini Municipality to fix a road that was badly damaged by a water leak.

Charmaine Ferreira, who lives on Gardendale Crescent, said that a water leak, which started in the middle of May, was only fixed a month later, and as a result of attending to the leak, the road has been left in a terrible condition.

Loose stones and mounds of sand lie at the boundary to Ferreira’s fence line, and recent heavy rains have exacerbated the matter with much of the sand and stone flowing into her yard.

“This all started in May. There was a water leak just on the bend of Gardendale Crescent. I reported the matter, and it took the municipality a month to attend to the leak. While the leak was fixed in June, the condition the road has been left in is shocking. The road needs to be re-tarred and rehabilitated. All the materials that were dug up ended up in my yard due to the heavy rains. My husband actually had to create a channel to divert the water and sand away from our home,” she explained.

“As a result, the bank outside my house has also changed shape, and we are scared of a possible landslide. The road is also sinking a bit, and the condition of the road worsens each time cars drive over it. The turnaround time for such matters by the municipality is supposed to be 24 to 48 hours, but in truth, this is not happening. We pay our rates diligently and deserve better service. I’m deeply concerned about the road if we experience heavy rains again. It will impact my property and possibly damage our fence line and our home,” she said
