Upgraded Hillary park brings hope to community

The refurbishment comes after years of pleading from Arundel Flats residents for a family-friendly park.

RESIDENTS of Arundel Flats in Hillary can now enjoy a fully fenced user-friendly park.

The park was recently revamped to provide the community with a safe play area and a gym. This was made possible by AfriSam, a mining company operating in the area.

Ward councillor Samantha Windvogel said it was an exciting day for the residents when AfriSam officially handed over the refurbished park on December 7.

Resident Brenda Nieman at the new outdoor gym.

“For years, residents approached me, asking for the park to be revamped. This area is hit with many social ills. I’m hopeful that this park will bring the community together in a positive manner.

“I wish to thank Senzi Mabaso for not giving up on this project – you made sure that it was a success, and for that, the community will forever be grateful,” said Windvogel.

Mabaso, a community development specialist at AfriSam, said that as a company operating in the area, they have a social responsibility to uplift the community.

“It is only right. We identified this park in 2018, but we were unable to work on it until this year due to red tape.”
Mabaso said they have also added tables, chairs and an outdoor gym for adults.

“This park is now family-friendly as the adults can sit and have a picnic while children play. They can also utilise it to exercise at the outdoor gym.”

The family-orientated Mabaso said it has been a long journey, but she is happy that it is now done – and in time for the December holidays.

“At first, it seemed impossible, but it just goes to show that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. We are glad with the result. This park is something that I would also love to have in my community,” she said.

The park has also been fenced to keep the children safe.
