Frustrated Motala Heights residents block off roads

The residents said they have been without electricity and water for almost two weeks.

MOTALA Heights and the surrounding industrial area remain inaccessible as protesters blocked the roads going into the area.

The protesters have been without water for the past 11 days and electricity for 14 days.

Residents from the area and the informal settlement in Motala Heights said they feel that protesting and blocking the roads is the only language that the government understands.

It is reported that about 100 protesters took to the streets – Trafford Road going into Goodwood Road – and burnt trees, tyres and rubber materials to block off the road around 02:00.

One of the residents, Billy Hoosen, said the situation is tense. “As we speak, no one can enter or exit the area.

“I can understand their frustration; these are basic needs. People have to go out to other areas to get water or buy it. People need electricity to iron, cook and do many other things.”

He said residents want the mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda to stand up and sort out this situation, especially with the striking municipal workers as it is also contributing to them being without basic necessities.

“The area is also dirty due to the garbage which has not been collected,” said Hoosen.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
