KZN Cerebral Palsy celebrates 55 years of care

The KZN Cerebral Palsy will be celebrating their 55th anniversary with a dinner and dance fundraiser on July 27.

THE KwaZulu-Natal Cerebral Palsy Association (KZNCP) will be celebrating 55 years as they continue to care for people with cerebral palsy. In their 55 years of existence, KZNCP has successfully sponsored the Children with a Challenge (CWAC), a daycare centre that takes care of the affected patients during the day.

KZNCP caretaker CEO Mark Denisse said the centre takes care of disabled children and adults for stimulation purposes.
“During the day, all members are engaged in different daily activities, which include orientation, feeding, toileting and themed activities. Each activity is catered for that person and their level of functioning. We have care workers who facilitate the programmes. Furthermore, we have birthdays and special-day celebrations,” she said.

Denisse said the programmes at the day care centre are catered specifically for their patients.

“The nature of this condition does not allow the individuals to be in school. Lots of individuals attend our centre to prevent deterioration of their condition and to ensure that they get to experience the best life they can possibly have. An alternative situation would be them staying home and following the same routine every day, and living a very sedentary lifestyle – this could be detrimental to their condition,” said Denisse.

She said the centre also works towards breaking stigmas and bringing attention towards people with disabilities. This is important as many of their members face barriers in society, and this prevents them from completely integrating into society.

In celebration of their 55th anniversary, the organisation will be hosting a dinner and dance fundraiser on July 27 at Resmount Primary School in Reservoir Hills. Linda Naik can be contacted on 0626388247.
