Former Westville mayor dies
Nicky Armstrong, who served in the Westville Council for 24 years, died peacefully last week surrounded by family.
FORMER Mayor of Westville. Nicky Armstrong. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 2, at the age of 85 with her husband, Basil, and her daughter, Heather, by her side.
Nicky was the mayor of Westville over multiple years and served in the Westville Council between 1972 and 1996.
She was the last mayor of Westville before the borough was merged with other parts of Durban to form the eThekwini Metro Council.
Her son, Nick, said that Nicky was a beautiful mother to him and his sisters, Lindy and Heather.
“She was also a wonderful wife to Basil,” he added.

A rock for her family and an icon of Westville, serving as councillor, deputy mayor, mayor and Alderman for 24 years, Nick said his mother epitomised indefatigable, selfless service to all communities, the environment, conservation and schools – serving on more than 45 committees over the years – and all without personal financial reward – such was her dedication to serving the people she cared so deeply for and the protection of the environment and animals.
She was also a teacher at the South African Jockey Academy for several decades, an institution that now honours her legacy with prestigious academic achievement awards in her name.

Her family thanked everyone who supported them through this very difficult time.
“We are truly grateful for the love shown by so many. Rest in peace, Mom – until we meet again,” he said.
