Aweh! Find out what’s happening in Durbs
Photography, art, music – the community’s creativity is shining in Durban this coming week for everyone to bask in its light.
AS we head towards the festive season, there are some superb markets to visit. And for the spooky or trick-or-treat lovers, there are some treats for you.
History with a romantic twist
The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Drama and Production Studies Department will stage The Scent of Change at the Courtyard Theatre at the Durban Institute of Technology from October 28 to 31.
The brand new musical is set in the late 80s and early 90s and weaves together a romantic love story in a historical time in our country, pre-democracy, where the waters of integration were being tested in the public schools of Chatsworth.
The integration between black and Indian learners was experimented with when small groups of black learners were introduced into Indian schools to see if integration would be possible after almost 40 years of segregation. The romance comes in with Preshni, a teenage Indian girl, the top of her class, and James, a young black student, who is introduced into the Indian school.
Tickets are R50 for the public, with discounted student prices at R30. To book, call 031 373 2194 or email BawinileM1@dut.ac.za.
Women in music

The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra World Symphony Spring Season brings women to the fore with a selection of beautiful pieces on the following Thursdays – October 31 and November 7 and 14 – at the Playhouse Opera. The pieces include the work of Beethoven, Haydn, Chopin, Borodin, Bruch, Dvorák, Rossini, Sibelius and Tchaikovsky – each with a women soloist, and one with a women conductor, too.
Tickets are available at Quicket. For more information, call 031 369 9438, email bookings@kznphil.org.za or visit www.kznphil.org.za.
