Pinetown SAPS members awarded at provincial excellence awards

Pinetown SAPS communications officer Jennifer Naidu and the Vispol Trio Team were awarded for going above and beyond the line of duty.

FOLLOWING Pinetown SAPS’s historic district win, some station members were recognised at provincial level, competing against 11 districts and 184 stations.

The members were awarded at the KwaZulu-Natal South African Police Service (SAPS) annual Excellence Awards which recognised outstanding police officers for their dedication and bravery throughout the challenging 2023/2024 financial year.

This prestigious event, held to honour those who went above and beyond in safeguarding the community, was attended by top officials, including the provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, and KwaZulu-Natal premier Thami Ntuli.

Mkhwanazi said that policing the province of KwaZulu-Natal is a challenge.

“One day can be total havoc and the following day absolute harmony. Multiple crimes scenes a day are no longer a surprise – the murder of one person hardly makes the news in this province.

“The number of violent crime incidents that this province experiences are enough to send chills down the spine, however, police officers in KwaZulu-Natal always brave the storm and face criminals head-on.”

He reported that during the 2023/2024 financial year, 121 614 suspects were arrested. Three thousand, seven hundred and sixty-five firearms (3 765) were recovered, together with thousands of ammunition of various calibre of firearms.

Speaking about the dangers police face on a daily basis, he said that no police officer must go out there to shoot at suspects, however, if suspects challenge the law by shooting at police officers, police will stamp the authority of the state in self-protection and the protection of the residents.

In addition, he thanked the Community Police Forum structures for their contribution to the fight against crime.

“Partnership is the way toward the attainment of a crime-free society. Thank you to all our crime-fighting partners – private security who support our initiatives and are more often than not the first responders at crime scenes. Together, we can isolate criminals, minimise their spaces of operation and create a crime-free society,” he said.

Pinetown SAPS station commander Brigadier Leon Matthysen said that he is proud of their communications officer, Jennifer Naidu, for being nominated alongside exceptional provincial talent and for taking top honours in her category, outshining competitors from the provincial office.

He also extended special recognition to the Vispol Trio Team, whose tireless efforts, day and night, have yielded an outstanding result.

“Securing a runner-up position in the provincial category is a testament to their unwavering commitment, perseverance and teamwork. Their selfless dedication to serving and protecting our community has earned them a well-deserved spot among the province’s finest.”

As station commander, Matthysen said he was ecstatic to see his team’s hard work and dedication acknowledged.

“This achievement not only boosts our confidence but also puts SAPS Pinetown firmly on the map, demonstrating that excellence is attainable,” he said.
