Join a Wednesday hiking group

Stay fit and join a group of supportive hikers every Wednesday.

JOIN the Wednesday Hiking Group at Giba Gorge which has a support guide for every Wednesday hike.

One of the hiking group members, Colin Chaplin, said that while some of their hikes may be a little challenging to those who are not reasonably fit, most Wednesday hikes are very do-able.

“Many people even consider them as ‘easy’. The group hikes at a reasonably slow pace, and fellow hikers are very supportive of each other. We say that we offer ‘social’ hiking because there is often much chatting between the hikers.”

He said that while most of their weekly hikes take place at Giba Gorge, located off Stockville Road, below the suburb of Gillitts, or via Pinetown, below the Mariannhill Licencing Bureau, they do occasionally visit other hiking spots once every two months – such as the Everton Conservancy and the Kloof Conservancy.

At the present time, Chaplin said they have between five and eight members hiking each week.
They meet at 08:00 each Wednesday at the Trail Centre Restaurant to commence hiking just after 08:00.

“Each week, we are accompanied by an experienced hiker named Richard, a Giba Gorge employee. He is provided by the owners of Giba Gorge for safety purposes.

“The weekly hikes always end back at the Trail Centre at approximately 12 noon (except, of course, if we are hiking in one of the conservancies). We attempt to ensure that our hikes do not exceed four hours of hiking, including one or two water and/or snack breaks.

“Hikers bring their own snacks and water.”

He encouraged interested people to join them for one or two hikes before deciding to join the club.

“Remember, reasonable exercise is good for the soul and good for everyone, no matter their age! We would love to welcome new members into our group,” he said.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
