New Germany bush becomes a growing concern

Following numerous appeals for the municipality to cut overgrown bush in Escom Road, one of the companies along the road has resorted to go public with the matter hoping that something will be done to sort out the issue.

THE unkempt bush in Escom Road, New Germany, is not only an eyesore but a health hazard, and the overhanging branches are scratching passing vehicles as the road has become narrow.

Martie Janse van Rensburg from one of the companies along the road said this has been an ongoing issue simply because the municipality does not maintain it.

“This is a municipal area and should be maintained regularly, and as a company there is only so much we can do; besides the bush is dense and it is dangerous to go in there, so we need people who are equipped to cut this bush and have the right resources.”

She stated that this bush is giving their company a bad name as it is the first thing they see when driving into the company.

“The situation is dire now as the bush has made the driveway narrow and the overhanging and fallen trees and branches are scratching vehicles.”

According to Janse van Rensburg, emails have been sent to the municipality and they have been told that someone was going to come out and do an inspection, but nothing has been done.

“We do not know what to do now. We have tried following proper channels but it falls on deaf ears; I think it has been more than a year since they have come out to maintain this area,” she said with a sigh.

The overgrown bush is attracting people to sleep in it, she said.

“We have found people sleeping in there, and have called police to remove them; they disappear for a short while and return. Because this place already resembles a dumping area, there are people who just throw their litter in here.”

She added that it also worries her that a stream runs along this overgrown bush.

“With people dumping, the water is getting polluted and what is happening to the wildlife? We are really in need of the parks department’s intervention as this is just spiralling out of control,” she said.

The Highway Mail tried to get comment from the municipality and the response was: We will revert with a response once we have received information from the relevant departments.
