“I was married for 65 years to my wife Diana and we have resided in the Highway area most of our lives. We spent many years in Westville before moving to Waterfall. After a few years, we settled here at the retirement village.”

Asked how he and his wife met, he smiled and said, “I was in the navy and we met at a dance in South Hampton.”

For the centenarian, being active, eating healthy and spending time outside is his recipe for a long life.

“I have a beautiful garden and that is where I spend most of my time.”

His memories of his childhood include riding a bicycle to school.

“We would ride a bicycle from home, leave our bicycles at the train station and we would find them when we return; there was less crime in those days,” he said.

He has three children, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His son described him as an adventurist who always loves trying new things.

“I have many special memories of my dad. I am happy to celebrate this day with him and I wish to thank everyone that made the day special for him.”

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
