Gelofte Skool hosts cube speed challenge

New cubers also got the opportunity to compete at the CubeCo Durban Summer 2024 Speedcubing Competition which was hosted at Gelofte Skool.

FORTY-THREE speedsters descended on Pinetown’s Gelofte Skool on Saturday, December 7 for this year’s CubeCo Durban Summer 2024 Speedcubing Competition.

The line-up included podium position winners from the World Cubing Association (WCA) African Championships 2024. Competitors competed in five different cubing categories from the standard 3x3x3 rubiks cube as well as the 2x2x2 and 4x4x4 to the Pyramix and Skewb variants to find the fastest fingers.

Nico Erasmus, who represented Gelofte Skool at the tournament, said rubiks cube solving is a fun way to practice and develop problem solving skills, which are critical in subjects like mathematics and sience.

The day started with two free introduction sessions. The afternoon session saw the speed cubers compete in the finals of the different cube categories.

Erasmus said it was a privilege to join hands with the organisers from CubeCo and the WCA.

“This was a great opportunity to see how young and old gather together and support and share ‘trade secrets’ with competitors.”

The main organiser from CubeCo, Craig Roodt, noted that these competitions are dependant on volunteers and supporters to get all the logistics for the day planned, and to get the required equipment and delegate representative from WCA available for the day in order to host an official event, so that competitor times can be registered on the WCA website and ranked with their international counterparts.

“CubeCo hope to be able host more competitions in 2025 to give new cubers the opportunity to compete and thanks Gelofte Skool for teaming up with CubeCo to make the competition a reality,” he said.

The category winners were:

Skewb: Christian Swartz with an average time of 7.54 seconds.

Pyramix: Chase Lee Roodt with an average time of 4.90 seconds.

4x4x4: Waseem Hoosain with an average time of 34.07 seconds.

2x2x2: Christian Swartz with an average time of 3.39 seconds.

3x3x3: Waseem Hoosain with an average time of 7.55 seconds.

Best male competitor was awarded to Waseem Hoosain.
