Pinetown SAPS shares back to school safety tips
Pinetown SAPS communications officer Jennifer Naidu put together safety tips for parents as the new school year begins.

AS the new school year begins on Wednesday, January 15, the South African Police Service (SAPS) urges parents, guardians, and learners to prioritise safety.
Pinetown SAPS communications officer Jennifer Naidu shared the following essential safety tips to ensure a safe and happy return to school:
Road safety:
– Use designated crossings: Teach your child to only cross roads at designated pedestrian crossings and to always look left, right, and left again before crossing.
– Wear bright clothing: Encourage your child to wear bright or reflective clothing to increase visibility when walking to or from school.
– Hold hands: For younger children, hold hands when walking near roads or in parking lots.
Cyber safety:
– Set screen time limits: Establish rules for screen time, including limits on social media.
– Monitor online activity: Keep an eye on your child’s online activity, including their social media accounts and online searches.
Personal safety:
– Know their address and contact details: Ensure your child knows their home address, phone number, and your contact details.
– Identify trusted adults: Teach your child to identify trusted adults, such as teachers, school counsellors, or family friends, who they can turn to for help.
– Practise stranger danger: Educate your child on the importance of staying safe around strangers and what to do if they feel uncomfortable or scared.
Bullying prevention:
– Talk to your child: Encourage your child to speak up if they experience or witness bullying.
– Know the signs: Be aware of changes in your child’s behaviour, such as withdrawal or anxiety, which could indicate bullying.
– Report incidents: Inform the school immediately if your child experiences or witnesses bullying.
She added that if anyone has safety concerns or witnesses suspicious activity to contact their local police station or call the SAPS Crime Stop number: 08600 10111.
