Pothole on Inanda Road causes multiple accidents

Waterfall residents are concerned about potholes that put drivers in danger on Inanda Road.

A NOTORIOUS pothole on Inanda Road in Waterfall has caused multiple accidents, with one incident leaving a car severely damaged. Julie Cox, the car owner, recounted the terrifying experience when her vehicle was hit by a company truck while she was driving with her five-year-old granddaughter, who was securely strapped in a car seat.

“The area is prone to issues due to its low-lying position and numerous potholes. Additionally, three nearby dirt roads contribute to sand washing onto the main road during rains, making it slippery. The potholes are frequently patched, but it’s only a temporary solution until the next rain, which brings us back to drivers swerving to avoid them on this busy road,” Cox explained.

The Ratepayers Association has taken steps to address the issue by putting up large signs urging drivers to reduce their speed to 20km/h in the affected area. “They’ve been doing what they can to raise awareness and encourage caution,” Cox added.

Despite continuous efforts, the road remains a hazard. Julie mentioned that requests for a permanent fix have been ongoing since the road’s collapse during the 2022 floods. “It’s been repaired numerous times, but the fixes just don’t last,” she said.

Ward 9 councillor Siyabonga Nala acknowledged the issue, stating that while he has raised the matter several times, the road falls under provincial jurisdiction. “I’ve been in contact with the relevant provincial authorities. They’ve assured me it will be fixed. The road has undergone multiple repairs, and we are hopeful for a long-term solution,” Nala commented.
