Highway couple’s love sparkles

Highway social butterflies, Winnie and Mike Wheeler, are still in love after 51 years of marriage.

FEBRUARY is a month of love and we end it by celebrating the Highway’s well loved couple, Winnie and Mike Wheeler.

Mike has always been a romantic at heart as he proposed to Winnie on Valentine’s Day many years ago. In March, the lovebirds will be celebrating their 51st wedding anniversary.

For the Wheelers, Valentine’s Day is a day of love, joy and happiness.

“Love is being kind, caring and tolerant of one another. It’s not just words but you need to show love by actions,” said Winnie.

The fashionable couple celebrated the day by taking part in the annual Valentine’s Ball which has been a highlight of their life.

“We love our dancing and we are grateful that we are still able to go out and do it every Saturday night,” said Mike.

Talking about the best gift Mike has received from his wife, he said, “Her undying love, she backs me and I back her. We face any problem or challenges together.”

Winnie said the key to their marriage is respect.

“It has definitely worked for us,” she said, adding that to be happy in life one must address people with kindness. “Be straight with people in a kind way,” she said.

Recently relocated to Assagay after spending many years in Pinetown, the social butterflies who are known in the fashion industry said they are delighted in their new home.

“We enjoy looking after our grandchildren who stay closer to us. We also take care of dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs and we have had a chicken recently moving in with us who are all squealing with delight at our new place, as my daughter could not take them with her at the place where she is currently staying,” said Mike.

They have been blessed with three daughters, three sons-in-law and 11 grandchildren.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
