IN today’s fast-paced world, the demand for mental and physical well-being has led to the rise of yoga and meditation practices, particularly in urban spaces. These ancient techniques offer individuals a way to manage stress, improve mindfulness, and cultivate inner peace. But while both promote wellness, they are slightly different in their approach. To explore these differences and understand why more people are turning to them, Caxton Local Media spoke to a yoga coach and a meditation coach about their benefits and how to get started.

Yoga

Yoga is a holistic practice that integrates the body, mind, and breath through postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation. While often associated with flexibility, its true essence lies in achieving inner balance and harmony.

Yoga coach Sonya Jardine attributes its growing popularity to accessibility and the increasing need for mental well-being.

“Life can be stressful, even outside the city. When taught correctly, yoga provides tools to be mindful of the body, breath, and mental state. It helps practitioners work with these states to create unity within themselves. Yoga is not about touching your toes — it’s about finding harmony so we are not constantly pulled in different directions by our thoughts. That is the goal of yoga,” she explains.

For beginners, Jardine recommends starting small, even with just five minutes a day.

“The biggest hurdle is thinking you need to dedicate a big chunk of time. Instead, build a habit gradually. We need to train our minds, and over time, it becomes second nature. Attending in-person classes with a knowledgeable teacher is a great way to start, but eventually, cultivating your own practise makes yoga a lifelong asset — no matter where you are or how old you get.”

Meditation

Meditation is the practise of training the mind, increasing awareness, and achieving a state of mental clarity and inner peace. It can be practised independently or as part of yoga. This is done by sitting comfortably, closing your eyes, quieting your mind and focusing on your breathing for a set time.

According to Gen Kelseng Jampel, a coach at the Kadampa Meditation Centre in Westville, meditation is gaining popularity due to growing scientific research supporting its mental health benefits.

“We are witnessing a rise in mental health challenges, and people are searching for solutions. Meditation is a proven method that has no side-effects — it simply needs to be incorporated into daily life to help clear the mind and promote overall wellness,” he says.

Jampel emphasises that meditation trains the mind to be present, leading to mindfulness and a more fulfilling life.

“From the moment we wake up, we are bombarded with activities and digital distractions, often leading to endless scrolling. Many people strive for better lives but struggle to enjoy the present moment. Meditation helps filter through thoughts, allowing you to focus on what truly matters. It trains your mind to think better thoughts, which ultimately leads to a higher quality of life,” he explains.
