Multiple injured after Pinetown high speed chase and shootout

A suspect is under police guard after sustaining multiple shots to his upper body.

TRAFFIC is severely affected around Underwood Road, just off the M13 in Pinetown, following a high speed chase and shootout this afternoon.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said one person believed to be a suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.

“Paramedics responded to numerous calls of a shooting incident as well as vehicle collision involving police and suspects.”

Jamieson said paramedics found the  area cordoned off by SAPS and the actual scene was spread over some distance.

According to Jamieson,  a truck that was allegedly driven by a suspect had collided head on into a SAPS vehicle while being chased by other SAPS members.

“Paramedics found multiple vehicles involved in the collision as well as the shooting incident as a result of the high speed chase.

“The vehicles were damaged while other vehicles were riddled with bullets. Paramedics assessed the alleged suspect. He was stabilised before being transported to hospital under police guard.”

Injured in the collision was a family who had just picked up their children from school.

“Five occupants from that vehicle had sustained minor to moderate injuries. They were also stabilised and transported to hospital. Police  involved in the collision also sustained minor injuries,” he said.

Jamieson advised motorists to use alternative routes as Underwood Road is closed in both directions due to the active crime scene.

“I advise motorists to avoid this area at all costs as traffic will be affected for some time,” said Jamieson.
