KZN walkers rake in medals at Masters

Westville Athletics Club's Gill Tregenna (83) claimed a new world record for women 80-84 years with a time of 2:39:07 for 20km. She also won the gold for the 5000m race walk event.

KZN walkers brought back a haul of medals, a world record, and a KZN record after competing in the SA Masters Athletics Champs in Oudtshoorn from May 1 to 4.

All walkers achieved their KZN Colours time standards in their respective age groups.

Westville Athletics Club’s Gill Tregenna (83) was the star of the show. Last year she broke the 20km race walk record but it was never verified as course length, electronic timing and a filmed finish were not all in order.

“This year everything was in order and she claimed a new world record for women 80-84 years with a time of 2:39:07 for 20km. She also won the gold for the 5000m race walk event,” said KZN walker and a member of the Kearsney Striders Athletics Club, Belinda Padbury.

Padbury (50-54 years) won two gold medals (5km and 10km) and set a new KZN record for the 10km race walk in a time of 57:49.

Caryn Loudon (55-59 years, Riverside Harriers) won two gold medals for 5km and 10km events. Jeanine Le Febour (60-64 years, PDAC) placed fifth and fourth for her 5km and 10km events.

Elizabeth Sneddon (65-69 years, Hillcrest Villagers) won a silver medal in her 5km event.

Frank Barnes (70-74yrs, Westville Athletics) won gold in both his 5km and 10km events.

Coach Oliver Mundell (not competing this year after recent surgery) and Padbury were awarded their SA Masters Colours for race walking at the gala dinner.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
