Organisation beautifies Westville

Keep Westville Beautiful, a non profit organisation, was started to restore and maintain the suburb’s beautiful environment.

WHAT started as an idea to clean up the Post Office in 2020 grew into an initiative called Keep Westville Beautiful (KWB).

Run by volunteers and funded solely by interested members of the community, this organisation goes from Westville North to Central Westville and surrounding areas cleaning and beautifying roads and gardens.

Westville resident PJ Storm was among a group of residents who took it upon themselves to return Westville to its former glory after the Post Office had become a hang-out spot for vagrants and drug dealers. The area around the Post Office had become an eyesore with litter and cardboard strewn in the vicinity.

Storm said Westville is a multi-generational community that cares about the suburb, and there are various volunteer Westville organisations that care for the parks and common areas.

“KWB currently has four full-time employees and operates from Monday to Friday. These fabulous four do everything from clearing drains in roads, cutting verges, picking up litter and maintaining gardens.”

The job that they do is evident from the work that has been done at the Post Office.

With various ‘Adopt A Spot’ sponsors and support from community members, Storm said this volunteer-run organisation is going from strength to strength.

“Areas are clean and safe for workers and families who attend the four schools in the area. KWB has the support of the Westville police, Metro police and various security companies, including JAG security who have also assisted with cleaning and beautifying areas of Westville.

“Westville is garnering more support as residents see the results of the suburb receiving ongoing tender love and care. KWB’s aim is to make Westville become the most beautiful suburb in the province,” said Storm.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
