Start your day on a high note with a group of walkers

The walking group is not only about boosting physical well-being but they also socialise and have fun as they have a colour theme each day.

WALKING is an excellent way to stay fit and healthy, and doing it with a group can be even more motivating and fun. The 10km walking group which was started by a group of walkers in Hillcrest is a wonderful way to start the day and everyone is welcome.

It is part of the Jolly walkers group which was initially started for a 6km daily walk – then a 10km pacers group was started for those who prefer to walk 10km daily.

The group walks each morning from Monday to Friday from 04:30 to 06:10. One of the walkers, Deanne Steytler, said they also meet on some Saturdays.

She said all the meeting places start from coffee shops where the group has coffee after the walk.

“Each day is a different route and some days we just make it up for a change.”

A fun aspect of the group is that they choose a colour for each day.

“Your colour can be a cap or a shirt in that colour. It’s not a necessity though – we just do it to make it fun for the photos.”

Currently there are eight regular walkers,

“We do walk at a bit of a pace. However there is another group of walkers called the Jolly walkers, who we are a part of, but they normally walk 6km in the mornings and they start at 04.45,” said Steytler.

She advised people who would like to join to consider starting with the Jolly walkers first to see how they feel walking 6km, and then progress to the 10km pace if they feel fit.

People who wish to join can contact Deanne Steytler on 072 816 5700.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
