Courier vehicle robbed at gunpoint at hospital, goods later recovered

The police say the stolen goods were recovered in a vehicle which was found in the Pinetown area on the same day of the armed robbery.

THE Westville SAPS are following all possible leads to arrest suspects linked to the armed robbery of a courier vehicle at a hospital in Westville on Wednesday, July 16.

The communications officer for the Westville Police Station, Captain Elizabeth Squires, said the armed robbery incident was relayed to the crime prevention unit at around 10:30 on the day.

“Upon arrival, members were informed that a DSV courier vehicle was followed by a blue Hyundai Tucson into the hospital and as the DSV vehicle driver and crew were dropping off parcels, they were robbed at gunpoint by four  males of goods being transported by the courier van. The goods were loaded into a blue Hyundai Tucson, which then drove off,” said Squires.

Squires said that within an hour of the armed robbery, SAPS received information about a vehicle which matched the description of the one which had been used by the suspects during the robbery at the hospital.

“The vehicle was spotted in the Pinetown area, and members’ swift reaction led them to the location where the vehicle was found hidden at the back of a block of flats,” said Squires.

She added that SAPS members, who had been working with Matrix Tracking, found the goods stolen from the robbery at the hospital in the boot of the vehicle, which, upon further investigation, it was learned that it had been reported stolen from the Plessislaer area.

“The vehicle was then seized and booked in at Westville SAPS for further investigation. A case of robbery is being investigated by Westville detectives. No arrests have been made at this stage, however, the team is following all leads to apprehend the suspects,” said Squires.

Westville SAPS Station Commander, Colonel Sharon Zamantungwa Sihlangu, applauded the members for their swift response in recovering the vehicle and stolen goods and is positive that whilst investigations continue, arrests are imminent.
