Kloof Conservancy’s M13 project keeps the verges clean
Have you ever observed the stark contrast in the condition of the verges and centre median along the M13, from Paradise Valley to the Hillcrest Old Main Road turn-off, compared to the stretch beyond and other M-routes in eThekwini? This well-maintained section is the result of the M13 Project, an initiative by the Kloof Conservancy, made possible through the support of local advertisers.
THE M13 Project run by Kloof Conservancy is making a huge difference to the freeway by maintaining the verges and centre median on the M13 from Paradise Valley to the Hillcrest Old Main Road turn-off.
Kloof Conservancy chairperson Paolo Candotti said this is run by the conservancy with sponsorship from the many advertisers who fund the small advertising signs with the Kloof Conservancy logo on them.
“Volunteers from the Kloof Conservancy manage this non-profit project under a long-standing agreement which has been operating successfully for more than 20 years. The conservancy charges for the advertising space and uses the revenue to hire a contractor with teams who remove the litter once a week, keep the verges free of alien invasive plants and cut the grass on the centre median and the verges,” explained Candotti.

In addition, many aloes and other flowering plants have been planted on the centre median and embankments which make the M13 look spectacular in winter.
“This section of the M13 provides an invasive alien plant-free corridor for the wonderful birds we have in the Upper Highway area. The Westville Conservancy has a similar arrangement on the M13 section from 45th Cutting to Paradise Valley,” said Candotti.
The conservancy’s chairperson said this project is a win for the public as they get a clean, attractive, alien plant-free road.
“It is also a win for the advertisers who get local advertising, and a win for the authorities as they don’t have to do or fund the work.”
Candotti added that a limited number of advertising spots are available.
“If you are in the market for advertising at a competitive rate and at the same time would like to contribute to our community, then contact the Kloof Conservancy at info@kloofconservancy.org.za.”
