The KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC, Siboniso Duma, has pledged to collaborate with Provincial Commissioner Lt General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to prevent violent incidents targeted at e-hailing drivers.

MORE than 10 suspects have been arrested following the shooting and assault of e-hailing drivers in Kwadabeka, just outside Pinetown.

MEC of Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma yesterday, Wednesday August 27, offered to work with KZN Provincial Commissioner Lt General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to ensure that the unfortunate incident in Maponya Mall, Gauteng, where an ehailing driver was shot and killed, is not repeated in KZN.

“The shooting and assault of e-hailing drivers yesterday should not be repeated in any part of KwaZulu-Natal. We wish to commend Lt General Mkhwanazi, his team, our Provincial Regulatory Entity and Metro Police for the decisiveness.

“They have ensured that there is peace and stability in KK Section in the interests of peace-loving people in KwaZulu-Natal.”

Duma said they welcome the arrest of between 10 and 15 suspects in this morning’s operation, Thursday, August 28.

He added that they will await Lt General Mkhwanazi and his team to provide more information in relation to the type of operation they executed this morning and the type of criminal offences allegedly committed by suspects.

“We remain committed towards ensuring the co-existence between e-hailing drivers and taxi drivers,” said Duma.
