Shoplifting, vehicle theft some of the concerns raised at meeting

Westville PR councillor Smoh Xulu says they were encouraged by the establishment of a CPF youth desk which will involve young people committed to combating crime in the Westville area.

THE increase at an alarming rate of shoplifting incidents at a local mall, vehicle theft and theft from vehicles were some of the crimes highlighted as a concern at a Westville community police forum (CPF) meeting held on Thursday, August 28.

The meeting was also attended by the PR councillor Smoh Xulu, alongside councillor Warren Burne.

Xulu said critical community safety matters were discussed with local law enforcement and emergency services at the meeting.

She added that the police also shared at the meeting the May and June statistics, which revealed an alarming increase in the number of shoplifting incidents at a local mall.

“Additionally, vehicle theft and theft from vehicles continue to escalate daily. SAPS officials cautioned residents to remain vigilant and prioritise personal safety at all times.

“Colonel Dlamini from Metro Police delivered an encouraging presentation, confirming that his department maintains a daily presence on our roads. He assured the community that Metro Police will intensify their operations across the western areas of Durban to ensure road safety for all residents. Colonel Dlamini emphasised the importance of driver alertness and strict adherence to speed limits,” said Xulu.

The PR councillor said they were particularly encouraged by the establishment of a CPF youth desk.

“This dynamic initiative brings together young people aged 18 to 35 who are actively committed to combating crime in the Westville area. It is truly inspiring to witness the next generation stepping forward to take ownership of their community’s safety and security challenges. Their involvement represents a promising investment in the long-term sustainability of our community safety efforts.

“The Westville CPF continues to demonstrate the vital role that collaborative partnerships between residents, law enforcement, and emergency services play in building a safer community. We extend our gratitude to all dedicated volunteers, community members, and service providers who contribute their time and expertise to enhancing safety and security in Westville. Through these ongoing joint efforts, we remain committed to creating a more secure and well-prepared community for all residents,” said Xulu.
