Hillcrest High learner tops EMS Olympiad

The school principal Denise Knight said the school is incredibly proud of how its learners fared, especially Terania Govender, who came out tops, taking first place overall in the Pinetown District.

HILLCREST High School Grade Nine learner Terania Govender placed first in the Pinetown District at the SA Economics Management Sciences (EMS) Olympiad, hosted by the KZN Department of Education and the SA Institute of Chartered Accountants earlier this month.

“Hillcrest High School encourages learners to participate in Olympiads to broaden their experience of the type of questions asked in Department of Education examination papers, as well as to benchmark our learners against other schools in the various subjects,” said the school principal Denise Knight.

Round one of the EMS Quiz was held at Hillcrest High School (HHS) in mid-August with 23 other schools from the Umhlatuzana Circuit invited. Terania and fellow Grade Nine learner Amy Neveling from HHS were selected to compete in round two at Newlands East Secondary School. After round three at Ferndale Secondary School in late August, the final round was held at Newlands East Secondary on September 9.

“Despite 14 schools competing in the second round, only two schools from the Umhlatuzana Circuit made it to the final round, Hillcrest High School and St Francis High School,” Knight said. “We are incredibly proud of how our learners fared, especially Terania Govender, who came out tops, taking first place overall in the Pinetown District, after competing against schools from our Circuit as well as schools from the two other Circuits in the District. She scored 70% in the final quiz – well done, Terania.”
