19th Annual Hillcrest High School isiZulu Evening a roaring success

The school's enthusiastic isiZulu learners put on another fantastic show for family and friends this year.

PERFORMERS from the isiZulu Department at Hillcrest High School had the audience on their feet dancing and singing along to traditional music and the rhythmic beat of drums during the 19th Annual isiZulu Evening held at Hillcrest High School recently.

“Our enthusiastic isiZulu learners put on another fantastic show for family and friends this year,” said Hillcrest High School deputy principal and Head of the isiZulu Department, Sibongiseni Ndebele. “For weeks before the evening, the school resounded with the beat of traditional drums and voices of our learners practising traditional songs and poetry in preparation for the evening. It was a joyous evening!”

The annual event serves as an opportunity for learners who are studying isiZulu First Additional Language to showcase not only their performance skills, but their language and public speaking skills as well. Natalie Rees and Thingo Dlamini, Grade 11 learners from HHS, welcomed guests, followed by a formal introduction of the evening’s events by isiZulu educator Thobeka Gabisa, a brief address by chairman of the School Governing Body Byron Creed, and Ndebele.

Learners performed several traditional girls’ and boys’ songs as well as traditional dances, a gumboot dance and various poetry renditions. The evening ended with the audience, including VIP guest Mrs Mthembu, the principal of Eden College, on their feet dancing to the finale.

The Hillcrest High School Audio Visual Club learners, under the guidance and direction of Educator-in-Charge, Mervyn Bartholemew, were congratulated for the excellent sound and lighting.
