Star College learner scores national colours

Sofia Kamalie said her selection to the South African Schools Tennis Team was a dream come true.

REPRESENTING her country on an international stage was a dream come true for Sofia Kamalie who was part of the South African Schools Tennis Team.

Sofia’s journey in competitive tennis began at the Berea Lawn Tennis Club, where she has been a committed member for several years.

The Star College Girls’ High learner was chosen for the national team during the KZN Tennis trials.

“Facing off against top players from various district schools across KZN, Sofia showcased her exceptional skills, winning every match convincingly. Her impressive performance earned her the position of number one player and team captain of the KZN Under 15 A Team,” said the school’s marketing manager, Sara Hayden.

In July Sofia traveled to the UK where she was awarded her South African Schools Colours.

During her tour, Sofia got a rare glimpse into the world of professional tennis by watching live matches featuring tennis legends such as Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka at Wimbledon.

“For an aspiring tennis player and sports fanatic, this was a dream come true,” said Sofia.

“Getting to watch my idols play live at Wimbledon was nothing short of surreal. I was also fortunate to get autographs and take pictures with some of the players — memories I will cherish forever!”

In the UK, the ecstatic Sofia said she experienced playing on clay courts for the first time, adapting quickly and winning most of her matches.

“Sightseeing in London, including visits to Buckingham Palace and Big Ben, added a cultural dimension to my journey, making it a truly holistic experience,” she said.

The Grade Nine learner emphasised the importance of hard work and perseverance. “Every match, every practise session, and every challenge has brought me closer to this moment. I am grateful for the support from my coaches, family, and school. This is just the beginning, I aim to continue working hard and achieving even greater heights,” she said with confidence.

Her supportive form educator, Nadine Pather, said she is proud of Sofia’s accomplishments and looks forward to witnessing her future successes.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
