Star College girls’ team looks forward to major tourney

Excitement is building at Star College as the school's talented girls' volleyball team prepares to represent the institution at the upcoming American International School of Johannesburg (AISJ) Volleyball Tournament.

THE Star College girls’ volleyball team is preparing to represent the Westville school at the American International School of Johannesburg (AISJ) Volleyball Tournament in Johannesburg in October.

The exciting opportunity for the girls follows the team’s recent performance in the 2025 Girls’ Volleyball League, where they achieved a third-place finish.

Hosted by Westville Girls’ High School and Danville Girls’ High School, the league brought together 18 competitive teams in the U16 division. Despite volleyball being a relatively new sport at Star College, the girls’ team made up of six Grade 10 learners demonstrated exceptional skill, teamwork, and resilience throughout the season.

Star College marketing manager Sara Hayden said the team, guided by coach Arhana Debipersad, dedicated countless hours to rigorous training and intense matches, mostly held on Saturdays over term two.

“Their perseverance paid off as they finished second in their pool, advanced confidently to the semi-finals, and ultimately secured third place in the league standings.”

Star College principal Ahmet Kayya said the school is proud of the girls for their dedication and success.

“We wish them the very best as they take on this prestigious tournament in Johannesburg. We are eager to see them shine on the international stage and bring back valuable experience and new victories.”

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
