WATCH: Fortune favoured some, whilst others were disappointed
Hillcrest residents John and Marilyn Davis were disappointed that ceramics were no longer being taken.
SOME were fortune enough to walk away all smiles and a little richer, whilst others were disappointed after the evaluation of their goods by antique expert Andy Elton.
Pieces of history kept for their sentimental and monetary value were brought to Elton at the Hillcrest Library on Wednesday, October 1, for cash evaluation.
Though pleased with the jewellery that turned into a few sheaves of paper in her purse, Pam McNamara from Westville said she was let down that her silverware amounted to naught.
McNamara said she had hoped to pocket money from her silverware, which would help cover her vet bills.
“Unfortunately, it was not sellable here, for Bentleys, and I was quiet surprised that the things that did sell were the tiny little bits of jewellery,” said McNamara.

Harry Fowle was astonished to learn from Elton that some of his items were of some value.

“I was pleasantly surprised with the values he gave for some of my items and I am happy with that,” said Fowle.
Fowle had also brought along a photograph of his grandfather, a World War I veteran, as well as his 1918 commission to second lieutenant, allegedly signed by King George V.
These, however, were not purchased by Elton.

Hillcrest residents John and Marilyn Davis were disappointed that ceramics were no longer being evaluated.
“Bentleys do not take ceramics anymore, so that was a bit of a disappointment,” said Marilyn.
Elton, who has decades of experience and a sharp eye for value, has appraised everything from vintage watches to war medals, once shelling out R65 000 for a single Rolex.
His vast experience includes presenting the Antiques Roadshow and What’s in the Attic.
