Renowned artist showcases her work at Woza Moya

Proceeds from Marjorie Jones' artwork will be used to support local community initiatives.

ESTEEMED artist Marjorie Jones will be featured at the Woza Moya Artists Wall in the month of October.

The concept behind the Woza Moya Artists’ Wall and Artists’ Cards is to create and showcase artists’ work. Each month a different artist is paid to paint or sculpt a feature piece on a 1.1m x 1.1m wall panel which is displayed outside the Woza Moya Hillcrest Aids Centre shop.

Woza Moya is the economic empowerment project of the Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust and assists the artist by marketing their work for the entire month. A greeting card is made of the painted wall panel and sold in their shops so the artists can earn an ongoing passive income.

This has worked well with artists earning from R200 to R1000 a month from the sale of the cards. The Woza Moya Artists’ Wall thanked the 100% Foundation for coming on board with an ongoing sponsorship and making this monthly event possible.

About the artist

Jones is a Durban-based multi-disciplinary artist whose career spans more than six decades. Born in Cape Town and raised in Kimberley, she began as a self-taught painter in high school before studying at DUT. Jones co-founded a sculpture and ceramics school with her father, Basil Buck Jones, but later shifted her focus to personal expression across ceramics, sculpture, textiles, and wearable art.

Now in her 80s, Jones concentrates primarily on painting – her layered, tactile works often undergo multiple transformations, reflecting her bold, evolving style. Her home is a living gallery, adorned with painted curtains, crocheted furnishings, and garden sculptures, embodying her belief that art belongs in everyday life.

Her upcoming exhibition showcases this renewed focus on painting and celebrates a lifetime of creative transformation. Proceeds will support local community initiatives, underscoring her enduring commitment to art as a force for connection and upliftment.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
