Watch: ANC members celebrate Nathi Mthethwa’s life in Pinetown

South Africa's ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, was found dead near the four-star Hyatt Regency Hotel in Paris last week and will will be laid to rest on Sunday.

A MEMORIAL service to celebrate and honour the life of South Africa’s ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, was held at the Pinetown Civic Centre on Thursday afternoon, October 9.

Mthethwa, was found dead near the four-star Hyatt Regency Hotel in Paris, after he was reported missing by his wife last week, following a ‘worrying message from him’.

During his memorial service, former police minister Bheki Cele criticised some South Africans for showing little sympathy and making a mockery of Mthethwa’s death on social media platforms.

Mthethwa previously served as minister of police, as well as minister of sports, arts and culture. His family performed a traditional ritual at the hotel to fetch his spirit before bringing his remains home. His body is expected to arrive in South Africa on Friday.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a Special Official Funeral (Category 2) for Mthethwa. The funeral will take place on Sunday in KwaMthethwa, KZN.

French authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
