Learners shine at science fair
Star College excelled at the 2025 International Science Fair which was held in Gauteng, with four participants earning medals and special awards for their outstanding research and presentation skills.
STAR College’s reputation in science and innovation was on full display at the 2025 International Science Fair at Emperors Palace in Gauteng.
The event, which took place from October 6 to 10, brought together some of the brightest young minds from across the globe.
All four participants from Star College who earned medals did not only demonstrate outstanding research and presentation skills, but also received special awards recognising their exceptional contributions in specific fields.
One of the learners, Mahir Somera, a Grade Nine learner who received a silver medal and was awarded the Best Junior Project in the Biomedical Category, said representing Star College Durban at the Eskom International Science Fair was an unforgettable experience.

“I presented my project, Eco-Dialysis, which was a low-cost dialysis alternative using natural filters. It focused on developing a sustainable and affordable filtration system inspired by the principles of kidney dialysis. My goal was to create a design that could make renal support technology more accessible in low-resource and rural communities.”
After months of research and testing, Mahir was honoured to receive a silver medal and the Category Award for the best project in the Biomedical and Medical Sciences category.
“Competing alongside many extremely bright young scientists taught me a lot about innovation, resilience, and the importance of science that truly helps people. The fair inspired me to keep improving my project, Eco-Dialysis, and to explore new ways to apply it in environmental and engineering contexts,” he said.
Principal Ahmet Kayya congratulated the learners for their success at the Science Fair.
Grade 10 learner Shreya Ballyram and Grade 11 learner Ahshiv Sookdhaw both received bronze medals, while Grade 10 learner Alyssa Pillay received a bronze medal and a South African Council for Civil Engineering Silver Award with a R5000 prize.
