Bail application of cop accused of killing cop continues

Bail hearing of police officer accused of murdering fellow cop set to continue in Pinetown Magistrate’s Court.

THE bail application of the cop who was arrested for the murder of a fellow police officer in Mariannhill is expected to continue at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, November 25.

The spokesperson of Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), which has taken over the matter, Phaladi Shuping, said Constable Andile Zulu remains in custody as his bail application is set to continue on Tuesday, with his commander expected to give testimony in court.

Zulu faces a charge of murder and another for handling a firearm while under the influence of a substance which has an intoxicating or narcotic effect.

Zulu was arrested on Friday, October 17, for the murder in Mariannhill on October 11.

Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo said Zulu (40) was arrested by members of the unit from Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation for the murder of Constable Siboniso Ngidi (29).

Mhlongo said: “It is alleged that Constable Ngidi was driving along Chestnut Crescent when he noticed a vehicle that was parked in the middle of the road.

“He requested the driver of the said vehicle to move the vehicle. An altercation ensued and the driver, who was later identified as Constable Zulu, fired several shots towards Constable Ngidi.

“Constable Ngidi was rushed to hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. A case of murder was reported at Mariannhill police station and the case docket was allocated to the Hawks members for intensive investigation. Preliminary investigation led members to Escombe railway station where Constable Zulu is working; he was requested to hand himself over but he escaped.

“The following day he handed himself over to the members of the National Intervention Unit in Durban Central and Hawks members were alerted.”
