Watch: Help bring Christmas cheer to families

Isiseko Imara aims to collect 400 Christmas food hampers to support underprivileged families across six KZN communities.

TO put a smile on the faces of underprivileged families this Christmas, George Mwaura from Isiseko Imara (World Changers Academy) is collecting 400 food hampers for the families the NPO serves.

Mwaura, a father of three who is committed to breaking the cycle of fatherlessness in South Africa, supports about 400 families through programmes in six communities: KwaDabeka, Savannah Park, Shongweni, Noodsberg, Chibini and Ixopo.

He said many participants come from homes where parents or guardians struggle to put food on the table.

“We would love to bless them with a meal this Christmas,” he said.

The organisation’s programmes go beyond sporting activities. Coaches conduct home visits to engage with guardians, mothers, grandmothers and caregivers to strengthen family support. They also offer academic support sessions and spiritual guidance to help ground the boys morally and emotionally.

Last year, the organisation hosted a Christmas party for the men Mwaura empowers through the Vulindlela Jobseekers Outreach.

“It was a success and the men appreciated it. So this year, we decided to take a leap of faith and make this initiative even bigger,” he said.

So far, 150 food buckets have already been filled with items families can use to prepare a wholesome Christmas meal.

Mwaura said people can support the initiative by purchasing a R220 food hamper at Westville SPAR and placing it in the trolley branded ‘Isiseko Imara’.

He expressed his gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the project.

“I would love to thank Westville SPAR for always lending a helping hand in our projects and for coming on board with the food hamper initiative. I would also like to thank the churches I work closely with, and not forgetting Westville Boys’ High School, who always support us,” said Mwaura.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
