Shreeya puts her best cricket foot forward

The Westville Girls' High School learner who has been playing cricket since she was eight years old said receiving the KZN cap represents her hard work, dedication, resilience and getting the opportunity to represent her province.

WESTVILLE Girls’ High School (WGHS) learner Shreeya Subbiah has been capped by KZN Cricket Union and will travel with the U18 KZN team to Potchefstroom from December 14-19.

Shreeya, who represents the KZN Dolphins U18 girls team, received her fourth consecutive KZN cap this year.

Her love for cricket stems from having a family that loves sports and enjoys watching the sport. “One day I started playing cricket in the back yard with my dad and I’ve loved it ever since. It has been my passion since I was eight years old.”

Receiving the KZN cap was another special moment in Shreeya’s journey.

“It represents my hard work, dedication, resilience and most importantly getting the opportunity to represent my province.”

She said her ultimate goal is to play cricket for the country at the highest level.

“I have been recently called up into an SA U19 training squad and my short term goal is to make the final squad and play in the next edition of the U19 World Cup in 2027.”

The 16-year-old added, “The satisfaction of timing the ball perfectly, taking a catch or bowling a good delivery, these are moments that create a sense of achievement for me and allows me to showcase my talent as an opening batter and a spin bowler. I love cricket as it often allows me to express who I am and what I am passionate about.”

WGHS head of sports Sian Tarbaton-Gouws said, “Shreeya’s dedication to cricket is truly inspiring, and we couldn’t be prouder of her journey since Grade 8.

Her remarkable progress promises even more achievements ahead. We extend our best wishes to Shreeya and the KZN team for their upcoming matches in Potchefstroom over the holidays.”

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
