SAPS Pinetown issues festive season safety warning
The Pinetown SAPS are urging members of the public to celebrate responsibly and remain vigilant at all times.
AS the festive season begins, the SAPS in Pinetown have urged residents to remain alert and to prioritise safety at all times.
The station’s communications officer, Jennifer Naidu, said the holiday period traditionally sees an increase in criminal activity, road incidents and opportunistic crimes, and added the police are calling on the community to work with them to reduce risks.
Naidu cautioned that as many residents will be travelling, shopping or hosting family gatherings, this often results in relaxed routines, and criminals use this time to target distracted individuals, unsecured homes and vulnerable community members.
Home and property safety
“The police are urging residents to ensure that all doors, windows and gates are properly locked. Community members are advised not to advertise travel plans on social media and to ask a trusted neighbour to monitor their homes when they are away. Outdoor lighting and alarms should be in working order,” advised Naidu.
Shopping and ATM safety
Naidu cautioned residents to remain vigilant at ATMs, to avoid accepting help from strangers and not to display large amounts of cash, or valuables.
“Vehicle remote-jamming remains a concern and motorists are asked to double check that their vehicles are locked before walking away,” said Naidu.
Road and travel safety Naidu reminds motorists that drinking and driving remains a major cause of fatalities during the holiday season.
“Drivers are urged to adhere to speed limits, check the roadworthiness of their vehicles and ensure all passengers, especially children, are properly secured,” said Naidu.

Personal safety in public spaces
She said police are also warning residents to be aware of their surroundings, avoid isolated areas and keep emergency numbers accessible.
“Crowded areas such as beaches, events and shopping centres require extra caution,” said Naidu.
Protection of vulnerable groups
Naidu said the police also emphasised that children should never be left unattended at home, in vehicles or in public spaces.
“The elderly are also frequent targets of scams and must be protected from criminals posing as service providers,” said Naidu.
Community involvement
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious behaviour immediately and to work alongside neighbourhood watches and CPF structures to increase visibility, added Naidu.
She said SAPS Pinetown remains committed to ensuring a safe and peaceful festive season for all residents and visitors.
“The public is urged to celebrate responsibly and to remain vigilant at all times,” said Naidu. Emergencies can be reported to 10111.
