45 motorists arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol

Durban Metro Police spokesperson Colonel Victor Zungu said these festive season arrests were made in the areas from Westville to Hammarsdale.

THIS festive season the Durban Metro Police Department (DMPD) arrested 45 motorists in the inner and outer west areas of Durban – from Westville to Hammarsdale –  for driving under the influence of alcohol.

This was confirmed by the DMPD spokesperson Colonel Victor Zungu who added that during the same period, in the same region, officers arrested one suspect for possession of an unlicensed firearm and another for “fraud and furnishing false information”.

Zungu urged all motorists and road users to “respect the law” as many people return to work on Monday, January 5.

“We are observing a high volume of holidaymakers driving out of Durban,” Zungu confirmed on Monday.

The KZN Department of Transport and Human Settlements set up a roadblock at the Mariannhill Toll Plaza on Monday, January 5, as many South Africans returned to work on the day.

Ndabezinhle Sibiya, the spokesperson of the department’s MEC Siboniso Duma, said the MEC was expected “to interact with motorists to sustain road safety”, with the road traffic inspectorate (RTI) team ensuring “visibility” and a “no nonsense approach”.
