Help village build bright futures for children
iKhethelo Children’s Village appeals for community support as funding pressures threaten its vital work caring for vulnerable children.
IKHETHELO Children’s Village has been a beacon of hope in the Upper Highway area of Botha’s Hill for more than 20 years.
Founded in 2001, at the height of the HIV/Aids pandemic, iKhethelo opened its doors to children who had lost everything; their parents, their security, and often their sense of belonging.
“Today, the children who arrive in our care come from incredibly difficult circumstances. Some have experienced abuse. Others have endured severe neglect. Some have been abandoned entirely. Each child carries a story no child should ever have to live through,” said iKhethelo business manager Shelly van Bakel.

Like many organisations in the child and youth care sector, Van Bakel explained that iKhethelo is experiencing reductions in traditional funding sources, while the needs of the children they serve continue to grow.
Through the commitment of the caregivers and social workers, and in partnership with the Department of Social Development, Van Bakel said they provide not only immediate safety and stability, but also a pathway toward restoration.
“Where possible, we work toward family reunification. Where this is not yet possible, we become the family offering consistency, care, and unconditional love. But we cannot do this alone.
“As the need continues to grow, so too does the pressure on our resources. We are facing significant financial strain, and without support, the sustainability of this vital work is at risk.”
She called on the community to stand with them.
“Your support, whether through financial contributions, food donations, or essential items, makes it possible for a child to feel safe, to be nurtured, and to begin to hope again. Because every child deserves more than just survival. Every child deserves to be chosen,” said a caring Van Bakel.
