Hillcrest High learners take gold at Model United Nations Conference

Hillcrest High School learners earned a Gold Award at the recent Model United Nations Conference in Durban.

AT the recent Model United Nations Conference, hosted by EduFleek at the Deutsche Schule in Durban on March 7, delegates representing Hillcrest High School achieved gold for best delegation, with one speaker recognised as a distinguished delegate.

“Our learners, with the support of educator Mrs Tarryn Pape, demonstrated their confidence and showcased their skills in debate, diplomacy and negotiation, earning top accolades,” said Hillcrest High School principal Denise Knight. “We are exceptionally proud of Leon Markwell, who was recognised as a Distinguished Delegate, and Lubanzi Maluleka and Sinenhloso Shozi who earned a Gold Award for Best Delegation.”

The Model United Nations (MUN) Conference brought together learners from several schools across Durban, providing an immersive academic experience that mirrored the workings of the real United Nations. Learners, or delegates as they are referred to, are required to engage on complex global issues, think critically, and present their arguments with clarity and confidence.

The Hillcrest High School delegates were designated North Korea and the UK as their countries to represent under the topic, “Assessing the legitimacy of unilateral military interventions under international law.” They were required to analyse global legal frameworks, debate opposing viewpoints, and work collaboratively to draft realistic and lawful UN resolutions.

Impressing judges and fellow delegates with their professionalism and strong grasp of international affairs, the Hillcrest High School delegation stood out among their peers and were awarded fitting accolades in doing so.
