HERE is a guide to what is happening in Durban this week, from a jazz show to fundraising events for the whole family.

Music notes for nature

The KZN Youth Orchestra will be performing at Westville Methodist Church on Friday, March 20, at 18:00 as a fundraiser for the important work of the Westville Conservancy.

For the hour-long concert, they will perform a carefully curated and diverse repertoire that spans classical, romantic and modern music, as well as some contemporary pieces.

The line-up includes such pieces as Mozart’s symphony number 25, What a wonderful world, Skyfall and Don’t Stop me now.

Conducted by Lykele Temmingh, former resident conductor of the KZNPO, and presented and narrated by Cathy Peacock, trumpeter and founding member of Platform Jazz, the KZNYO comprises young musicians from all around KZN who are passionate about preserving and celebrating the enduring magic of orchestral music.

This year the music girls from Westville Girls High School will also participate, bringing their choir and marimbas to the occasion.

Tickets are R100 for adults, and R80 for pensioners and students, and can be booked through Quicket.

Sacred sounds with soul

THE Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at UKZN presents Nduduzo Makhathini Sacred Concerts featuring Linda Sikhakhane on Wednesday, March 18, at 17:30.

Sacred Concerts is a new ‘sound strategy’ that improvisor and scholar Makhathini is embarking on.

This follows from his various projects seeking to align sounds with context(s).

Makhathini believes that sounds possess ‘spiritual significance’.

As such, this concert is focused on various types of ‘sacred’ music that stems out of indigenous cultural (and religious) systems that influence Makhathini’s musicality.

For the inauguration he invites his collaborator and saxophonist Sikhakhane to explore what ‘sacredness’ might look and sound like when approached from an improvisation standpoint and with some ‘jazz’ sensibility.

Event details: Nduduzo Makhathini Sacred Concerts featuring Linda Sikhakhane on Wednesday, March 18

Doors Open: 17:30

Time: 18:00 – 20:00

Tickets are R130, R100 for pensioners, and R70 for students with valid student card.
