ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the incident occurred shortly after 09:00 on the Pietermaritzburg-bound carriageway, before the Richmond Road off-ramp.
“The light motor vehicle reportedly lost control, broke through the guardrails and came to rest in a river below, out of sight from the roadway.”
The child was transported to the hospital by ALS Paramedics shortly after the incident.
Rescue teams, including eThekwini Fire Department and Search and Rescue South Africa (Sarsa), worked to retrieve the two adults from the river below.
The traffic was severely affected as one lane on the M13 was closed, causing traffic congestion stretching as far back as St John’s Bridge.
