Watch: Westville pub murder accused appears in Durban High Court

Westville pub murder accused Nicolaas le Roux appears in Durban High Court as case adjourned for legal consultation.

WESTVILLE pub murder case accused Nicolaas le Roux made his first appearance at the Durban High Court today, Thursday, April 16.

Le Roux is charged with the murder of his wife Taryn, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition, as the licences for the firearms had allegedly expired.

His case was moved to the Durban High Court after an indictment was served at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on March 6.

In his previous appearance at the Magistrate’s Court, the court heard that Le Roux was previously a member of the South African National Defence Force.

As a member of the Special Forces unit he worked abroad as a close protection officer, which required him to travel overseas for extended periods before returning to his marital home.

The accused reportedly owned three firearms: a revolver, a shotgun, and a Colt pistol, which he allegedly carried daily while in South Africa.

The judge adjourned the case to Monday, April 20, for Le Roux’s newly appointed Legal Aid lawyer to consult with the accused and read the documents from the State so he can get direction on the case.

Le Roux remains in custody.

Taryn’s father, Vincent Barbarovich, said he is not happy with the way things have developed.

““It is taking too long… our legal system sucks… this is nonsense… we cannot be attending court cases at our age; justice needs to be served,” said Taryn’s elderly father.

“Yes, he is in jail but he needs to be sentenced; we can not be attending court cases at our age, justice needs to be served,” said Taryn’s elderly father.

Taryn’s foster son Daniel, who is in matric this year, missed school today to attend court.

Speaking to the Highway Mail, he said softly that he misses everything about his mother.
