Tertiary institution partners with NGOs
Emeris Westville students are teaming up with local NGOs to drive social impact, gaining real-world experience and citizenship skills. The NGOs involved include CHOC, DKMS, SABMR, Lifeline, APD, Islamic Relief, and Lives with a Purpose.
EMERIS Westville students are joining forces with local NGOs, CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation SA), DKMS (Deutsche Knochenmarkspenderdatei or German Bone Marrow Centre), SABMR (South African Bone Marrow Registry), Lifeline, APD (Association of and for persons with Disabilities), Islamic Relief, and Lives with a Purpose, to drive social and development impact.
To facilitate this, Emeris Westville recently hosted an NGO Open Day on campus. The Open Day made way for an innovative collaboration focused on tackling pressing community challenges.
Its purpose was to equip students with real world experience and citizenship skills through building sustainable partnerships that will strengthen collective work within the community.

Shayuri Naidoo (Alumni IIE Bachelor of Arts Emeris Westville) said: “The primary reason I chose to volunteer for CHOC is because I am a recent IIE Bachelor of Arts majoring in Communication Science and Psychology graduate who intends to become a Neuropsychologist, thus, hands on experience with vulnerable individuals, such as children with cancer, provides me with the opportunity to gain experience in the area of psychosocial care.
CHOC is a national NPO dedicated to supporting children and teenagers diagnosed with cancer and life-threatening blood disorders, as well as their families.
“Emeris Westville and our NGO partners united with the purpose of educating students to stand together to create meaningful change by giving them volunteer opportunities, empowering communities, fostering sustainability and building long-term relationships while gaining experience and learning citizenship,” added Zanele Ntombela, Student Wellness Specialist, Emeris Westville.
