Illegal to have 68 dogs on ‘that residential property’ – SPCA
The Kloof and Highway SPCA manager says 68 dogs were found in the house, with some not having access to food or water.
THE Kloof and Highway SPCA has highlighted that “it is against the by-laws” to have 68 dogs “on that residential property”.

This after the Durban Metro Police Service (DMPS) said in a statement that 68 dogs were found at a property in Farningham Ridge on Tuesday (June 2).
The manager at the Kloof and Highway SPCA, Barbara Patrick, confirmed that the organisation was part of the operation on Tuesday when the dogs were found.
“There were 68 dogs on the property, found inside the house. Some dogs were in crates with no access to food or water. These are the dogs that were surrendered to the SPCA by the owner.
“We cannot confirm the details regarding the registration of the owner of the property as an animal rescuer. It is against the by-laws to [have] 68 dogs on that residential property, being an animal rescuer does not mean you are above the law,” said Patrick.
In the statement on Tuesday, the Metro Police said: “During the operation, 68 dogs were found on the property and were subsequently removed by the SPCA for assessment and care at their facilities.”

However, Patrick clarified that of that 68, “nine dogs were surrendered to the Kloof and Highway SPCA”.
Patrick said the SPCA appeals to the public to ensure that they check where the animals are kept by the animal rescue organisations they support.
“All animals need a safe place to escape from noise and activity. Being confined in a house with 68 dogs does not allow any animal its own safe space. Please can we also remind everyone, that although we want to save all the dogs needing help, we cannot allow any animal to live in an environment other than a home where it is cared for, loved and is part of your family,” said Patrick.
Metro Police spokesperson, Colonel Victor Zungu, said a joint statement with the SPCA will be issued in the coming days following a meeting which was held by the two entities.
