Rekha Singh, MRS KZN 2025, teaches yoga in her spare time and volunteers most of her lessons with senior citizens, children’s homes, or individuals in wheelchairs.
The Queensburgh News caught up with the mother of two and learnt about her yoga journey:
What’s your favourite yoga pose and why?
Shavasana (corpse pose) is my favourite because it represents complete relaxation and surrender. In a busy world filled with constant demands, it offers a chance to be still, quiet the mind and reconnect with a sense of peace and renewal.
What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had with your students?
One of my most memorable experiences was teaching a yoga session at the KZN Blind and Deaf Society. It challenged me to adapt my teaching style and reinforced my belief that yoga is for everyone. Seeing the joy and appreciation from the participants afterwards was incredibly rewarding and reminded me of yoga’s power to create connection and happiness.

How does yoga help people cope with daily life in South Africa?
Yoga helps people manage the stress and pressures of everyday life by encouraging mindfulness, balance and self-care. Through movement, breathing and meditation, it provides practical tools to calm the mind, reduce anxiety and improve overall well-being.
What’s a unique way you’ve incorporated local elements into your yoga classes?
I focus on hatha and restorative yoga, which are particularly beneficial for people dealing with stress, anxiety and depression. Using props such as pillows, blankets and blocks helps create a supportive environment where students can fully relax and experience deep rest.
How do you think yoga can bring people together in our community?
Yoga means “union”, and its principles of mindfulness, compassion and balance help foster connection and understanding. Yoga classes bring together people from different backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging and strengthening community bonds.
