Hillcrest twins prove sport can change lives

Waterfall twins Emily and Jordyn Brauns impressed at the Oceans8 Charity Swim, while helping raise R1.5 million for charity.

LOCAL 13-year-old twins Emily and Jordyn Brauns from Waterfall, Hillcrest, made waves for all the right reasons in the challenging Oceans8 Charity 4 Mile Swim at Vetch’s Beach outside the Durban Undersea Club (DUC) on May 23 and 24.

Both girls are learners at Hillcrest Primary School and they are committed swimmers with Aquazone Swim Club.

The twins showed incredible determination as they tackled the open water event.

Over two days, they completed 4 miles (6.4km) each in the ocean.

Their effort went beyond the physical challenge, contributing to R1.5m raised in support of charity.

Emily achieved:

  • Personal best time of 34.21.
  • Placed 1st in her age category.
  • Placed 13/40 overall.

Jordyn achieved:

  • Personal best time of 35.40.
  • Placed 2nd in her age category.
  •  Placed 15/40 overall.

Participants in the Oceans8 mile swim were required to raise funds for 14 invitational charities, benefiting various organisations such as:

  • CROW – Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife.
  • Game Rangers’ Association of Africa.
  • IPSS Search and Rescue.
  • Makabongwe Pre-School.
  • Made for More.
  • Nazareth House in Berea.
  • PMB Children’s Home.
  • Umduduzi Hospice Care for Children.
  • Rise Against Hunger Africa.
  • Sport for Lives.
