“The first five years of a child’s life are the biggest determinant of their future success. Through our Superhero Runners, funds are used to provide proper nutrition, physical development equipment, educational resources, and the support of qualified teachers who assist with children’s physical, emotional and educational development.
“Having the right foundation means they are ready for Grade One and able to cope throughout their school journey. Achieving a matric qualification or tertiary education gives them the opportunity to support themselves, their families and their communities,” she said.
Deedat highlighted that investing in Early Childhood Development has a positive impact in the country. She thanked the Comrades Marathon Association, their “Superhero Runners”, and their donors for making this possible.
“Community Chest also demonstrates its support for the running community by hosting numerous refreshment stations at races throughout the year, as well as playing a role in the Runners’ Village, which accommodates runners on the night before and the night after the race.”
She added that they look forward to seeing everyone at the Comrades Expo on June 11, 12 and 13, and to supporting the Ultimate Human Race participants on Comrades Day – Sunday, June 14 – at the last official refreshment station.
“Our Superhero Runners have the opportunity to run the final 2km and cross the finish line wearing a red cape. We have been told that this red cape provides a huge boost at the very end of a long journey, as it serves as a reminder of the young children they are running for.”
