Suspended police minister’s devices seized as probe deepens
The raid is linked to ongoing cases of defeating the ends of justice and fraud opened at Durban SAPS in 2025.
SUSPENDED Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s spokesperson Sthembiso Mshengu said Mchunu will address the issue about his devices that were never returned and many other matters that evolve around his name in the coming weeks.
This comes after Mchunu’s electronic devices were seized at his home on Monday, September 21, for the second time. The raid is linked to ongoing cases of defeating the ends of justice and fraud which were opened in 2025 at Durban SAPS.
Police in KZN confirmed that members of the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit seized electronic devices at Mchunu’s KZN residence under a search and seizure warrant granted by the Johannesburg High Court.

SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the minister handed over cellphones with specific IMEI numbers in the presence of his attorney.
“It is a normal investigative process linked to ongoing cases of defeating the ends of justice and fraud opened in 2025 at Durban Central,” said Netshiunda.
The minister’s spokesperson reported that this is the second time Mchunu’s communication devices have been seized and the first set was never returned, adding that the minister will address the matter in the coming weeks.
He noted that the warrant listed specific cellphone IMEI numbers.
“As a law-abiding citizen and in the presence of his attorney, handed over the handset in line with the directive of the court. It must be noted that this is the second time police have seized these communication tools without having returned the first set.”
Mchunu was placed on special leave by President Cyril Ramaphosa in July 2025 following allegations made by KZN police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that the minister had links to criminal syndicates and had interfered in high-profile police investigations.
