Volkswagen recalls 291 Amaroks in SA over airbag safety risk

The National Consumer Commission has announced that Volkswagen is recalling 291 Amarok vehicles sold nationwide between June and September.

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced a recall of certain Volkswagen Amarok vehicles over a potential airbag defect that could reduce protection for occupants in a crash.

According to the NCC spokesperson, Phetho Ntaba, the recall affects 291 vehicles sold nationwide between June 2 and September 15.

The supplier, Volkswagen Group Africa, informed the Commission that in the event of a front or side impact, the curtain airbag may not fully deploy due to contact with a component in the vehicle interior.

“Sharp-edged plastic components may also come loose or remain in the airbag. The issue may result in reduced protection for the driver and front passenger.

“Sharp-edged parts of the guide element could also separate or remain in the head or neck contact area, resulting in an increased risk of injury in the event of an accident,” said Ntaba.

Consumers who own the affected vehicles are urged to take their vehicles to any approved Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles dealer for replacement of the affected components.

“The work will be carried out at no cost to customers,” said Ntaba.

Consumers with questions relating to the recall can contact the NCC at productrecall@thencc.org.za.
