EDITOR- The page 4 story, titled “GO!Durban project is nine months behind,” in the September 4 issue, refers.
Firstly, one has to ask why? Is it because of the lack of money, unskilled workers, bad planning, no planning, no foremen to make sure everything is going to plan, slack or couldn’t care foremen or just plain bad workmanship, in general.
Secondly, who is the contractor or who won the bid for this “game-changing” project. Whoever he is, he must be held accountable or a new contractor must be brought in to catch up and complete the job on time, possibly even earlier, because the roads are in a current accident/s-waiting-to-happen state.
Thirdly, the municipality must be held accountable and give the public, residents and taxpayers a report and update on how it plans to remedy the situation.
Another issue which the story touched on – why are there no Metro traffic officers to try to help ease the congestion and pain a driver has to endure every day during construction?. At the one traffic light in the dip in Shepstone Road at the bottom by the Shell garage, there is a construction worker, decked out in construction gear and hard hat who gives preference to taxis who create a third lane and who push in – he must be relieved of his duties and be replaced by a traffic officer.
