Inconsistency in SAPS management is a concern

Letter to the Editor - week ending 29 July 2016.

EDITOR – For the past 12 years, and under the management of three commanding officers, Pinetown SAPS has failed to demonstrate decisive leadership decisions.

This is in light of the constant redeployment of its crime prevention commanders and replacing the station commanders like new brooms who are solely designated to go and “fix up” under-achieving stations in other clusters.

The community I represent is committed to working with any station, at any level in helping with community participation, guidance, intervention and CPF forum work.

However, as soon as a station like Pinetown starts improving its crime stats, or a crime fighting initiative bears favourable community growth, then its crime commander or station commanders are transferred to other cluster stations.

In Pinetown, a hard-working, dedicated station and CIC commander is replaced within 18 months to go and fix up poor-performing stations.

The current state of the Pinetown station leaves much to be desired. If the community is to partner with government in upgrading infrastructure and making Pinetown SAPS more professional and appealing, I suggest management stops replacing its commanders and sets out a proper five- year management role-out initiative and hold them accountable with the aim to stop the rot to the morale of its members and to the decay of the building.
